a buddy of mine and 88rangerboy had a 90's model ranger he put 36's on it and put a 302 in it with a camper special transmission and transfercase Omg that thing was so bad, the engine was rebuilt from the bottem up with all kinds of goodies. I drove it one time and had to park it, to much power i barley touched the gas and it would just sit there and spin the 36's
i don't know what he had for gearing, i mean you just tap like a quick tap and let go and it would spin the 36's, i know he had lockers cause it pulled both tires
it had a stick gearing at first if I remember right. I know when it was sittin on 31's or 33's with the 4.0 still in it he drug a roll back tow truck backwards during a tug of war. As far as I know after he put the 302 in it he might have put a 4.88 gear in it, but I'm not sure cause someone else told me. He never confirmed if he did or not.
ok i got a 1998 ford ranger 2 wheel drive and i got it lifted 7 inchs with a spindel lift and body lift but about the gears i had 3.73 stock and i had 34's and needless to say i had problems and i swapped rear ends to have the 4.10 and i aint really had a problem since and i only have a 4 banger and i also had my 34 super swamper tsl but i just thought i would give my input so now i have 33's big horns with 4.10 gears aint got no problem but it aint gonna spin no tires on the hard top but it gets the job done
oh yeh i had the 34's on a stock set of 15's off my old crown vic. and now i have the 33 on a set of stock 16 off a 4x4 ranger got them for 200 off of ebay i had the 34 where 34 10.50 r 15 never had a problem and now i clear my tires with alot to spare
I can spin 38s on pavement, with a (mildly) built 4.0 and 4.56s with a miller mega traction locker. Its really easy to spin mud tires. Stock 4.0 would prob do it with the right gears. No need for 2 extra cylinders.

You could have fit 33's with a t bar crank. With the 4cyl you really need 4.56s or deeper.
I agree with desertstorm, running anything bigger than 31's on a 4 cylinder should 4:56 up to 33", 4:88's up to 35". This will allow the best performance from your tires and truck.
