Odd Power steering issue

I just replaced the Power steering pump on my 77 F-250 2X4 because it was leaking and screaming. Followed all the bleeding procedures, fluid levels etc. Steering was otherwise working fine with the exception of the dieing pump.

Now, no power assist to the left. Ok to the right but nothing to the left. If I jack up the front everything works fine left/right. If I am moving it works ok to the right for a bit then really starts to resist (kind of fights back). If I am stationary or moving very little, complete resistance. No whining, no foaming or noticable air in the fluid and steady fluid levels durring all of the above situations. No noticable binding or slack in the steering tie rods, ball joints etc.

The Power steering unit is about 13yrs old (the pump about 14 yrs). Could the new pump be pushing fluid past old seals in the old steering unit? Or could there just be debris from the old dieing pump packed up into the unit?

Been driving around for about five days with no noticable change.

Any suggestions whould help before I just start replacing everything.

Thanks,
Scott

I would start with a p.s.i. gage in the high p.s.i. line & see where you're at.

Unfortunately this is probably the problem.

BTW- Always install a return line filter whenever the PS system is worked on or a component replaced.

Wix Transmission/PS Filter
===================
Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
Ford filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles

The debris answer seems to be the leading contender. (Can't mix up the lines since they are different sizes).

Is there a way to flush out the power steering unit if it is debris in the unit, or just replace the whole thing and move on?

You can take it apart, clean it out. Inspect it and then put in new parts and seals. Or you can just get a reman unit. Make sure you do not run it without that filter! Any moment a bit of debris could make your new pump into a screamer again.
