went out to start the truck today and there was nothing, i guess someone said they heard a quiet click. The radio, lights, etc worked fine, tried jumping it, didn't work. I replaced the starter coil and checked the started which was fine. There has to be some problem between the key and starter coil doesn't there. I have to think there is either a bad connection somewhere or a loose wire. Is there anything else that someone can think of?
thanks
By starter coil do you mean the starter solenoid or is in the coil the plugs into the distributor? If it was not the solenoid check that. It could also be the netural saftey stwitch if it is an auto. Our 77 did the same thing and I replaced the coil, solenoid, ignition switch, battery and cables. Untill I finally gave up and took it to the shop where they fixed the NSS. One last thing on a 77 the book says the NSS is on the tranny but mine is on the column, so if it is that you may need to look in both places.
Have you checked both ends of the batt and starter cables for condition and connection? Even if they look good, that would be number one for me.
Have you tried this easy test? Assuming the new solenoid (or relay) is installed and operating properly, with the key off, trans in park and the break set. At the starter solenoid, using a piece of wire as a jumper, touch one end of the wire to large terminal from the batt and the other end to the nut on the small terminal next to it. The engine should turn over, if it does then your problem is up the small wire on that terminal or it’s the starter. Be very careful not to touch ground with the jumper wire, as it is full 12V hot.
Again make sure the key is off and the trans is in park, using this method bypasses the NSS and it can start in gear…………not a good thing.
verify the battery is fully charged, and in good condition, take to Autopart store if you think it's bad.
Clean all connections on battery and check conditions of cables.
Check for good electrical connection on starter relay (solenoid).
check you engine block for good negative ground connection.
Clean all electrical contacts if necessary with steel wool or fine sandpaper.
In 78 the NSS moved to the transmission from the column.
The 79 is the same as the 78
Ok....From the top !
Is your battery Fully Charged.
This has to be done FIRST before any circuit or part testing as we are doing the process of elimination to figure out the problem.
On thew solenoid is a small terminal with the letter S beside it.
Power from the key being in the start position sends a 12 v shot of power to this terminal to engage a LARGE amount of power from the battery to pass through solenoid to the starter cable..... to turn the starter over.
Haiving lights & Horn means nothing compared to the power needed from the battery to turn the starter over.
If the battery has a full charge
If the solenoid is Good
If the Starter Drive (in the starter) isn't hung up.
The starter isn't shorted out
The starter should crank when you attach a wire from the battery + Post to the S terminal of the solenoid.
have you checked the..umm whats it called? the starter relay i think? someone help me out, it has two prongs inside it that can get a little rusty. It is a small box mounted to the firewall, well it is on my car anyways. but thats what happened to my Pontiac once. i just sanded the prongs down with a fine sandpaper. anyone know what im talking about?
Well, after cleanin the connections, i jumped the solenoid and that worked, so kept diggin and found a bad connection between my nss and solenoid so fixed her up and it works great now!! thanks for all the help
