Electric radiator fan?

Has anyone had any success switching to an electric radiator fan on one of these older FE engines, like a 390? If so, what size and brand did you go with?

I did this on my SUV and I loved it, the engine sounded nice without the fan. I would wire it up with a thermostat and everything so it wouldn't kick in until necessary.

I also think it would be nice for AC purposes because I would mount a secondary fan on the AC condensor to improve AC performance.

Anyways just wondering...

The off road guys really like the Taurus fans from the 3.8l models. All the aftermarket fans that pull enough air are too expensive. I am running a fan out of a camero.

So is that to say that the standard aftermarket fans like the 18" ones at Autozone, don't pull enough air?

I don't think they will do it under a heavy load or idling in very hot weather. But every engine/cooling system is different. The thing about Big chain places like AZ is if it doesn't work then you can usually take it back. This is one of those things you are just going to have to do some trial and error until you get it right.
But one of those wired to a thermastat and one in front of the A/C condenser wired to the A/C may work. Only one way to find out.

I dunno about idling! Usually the opposite is true, usually electric fans are BETTER at cooling an engine at idle than the normal fan, because at idle, your normal fan is not turning very fast, so it's not moving as much air at low RPM...

An electric fan on the other hand is moving MAX airflow no matter what even if you are idling.

He is asking about the cheap 18 inch fans from AZ. Greg had some issues idling with the expensive BlackMagic fan also. I don't remember exactly what he did to fix it. mayBe he will chime in.

I went with a flex-a-lite electric dual fan setup on my 390FE. Works fantastic...and can idle all day or pull a 5000lb load without any over heating issues. Has a max of 4600cfm, but will only use 60% until the full 100% is needed. So it helps with the charging system too.

27" Electric Fan (dual 13.5"), Part #295

FYI...I also changed out my factory radiator. Installed a Griffin aluminum direct bolt on radiator. Plus upgraded the water pump too. Use an Edelbrock aluminum water pump.

It is a sweat setup...and no issues thus far.
