I KNOW I POSTED THIS IN A DIFFERENT PLACE BUT I THINK THIS IS WHERE IT SHOULD GO.
My good friend has a 2002 F350 with 7.3. He uses is for his used car business. He pulls a three car trailer every week about 600 miles round trip. For the past several week, when he is going up a hill under load the engine has a sudden hickup and then acts like nothing is wrong. It is like he hit a brick wall for just a split instant then nothing is wrong. It has around 130k on it, everything has been done by the dealer when something goes wrong.
He has taken it back to the dealer several times and they can not get to problem to happen for them. Just wondering if anyone else has has this problem or have heard about this happening to someone else
CPS more than likely. Crank Position Sensor is a huge weak point, and it sounds like your friends truck is misfiring. Should get one and replace it soon. About $100 for the international blue sensor.
All you need is basic tools to change it in ur driveway.
The black one is about $60 on EBAY and is the stock one. The debate is on for the blue one (and I don't want to rekindle it here) and just wanted to let you know.
Blue on is designed for a different Internation egine. Black one was designed for our Powerstrokes. Search the forum for a thread titled "IHC Blue CPS" and you'll find an incredibly long discussion about it. No definite conclusion was ever reached, since the blue ones seem to perform differently for everyone. I however do not want to stir up the discussion about it again.
I ask the International dealer the other day about the difference between the black and blue and he said that the blue is a old design back in 1994 for a 6 cyl International engine.
the black is new design.
gseeders
There's a lot more to it than "old" and "new" design, but a parts counter guy isn't likely to know any other way to describe the difference.
The gauss of the internal magnet is very different in strength, causing the signal that's output to occur at slightly different times, causing the timing of the injection of the fuel to be a little different.
It's sort of like messing with the distributer's spark advance on a gasser. Every engine reacts a little different to it. I feel the factory design is the safest, and your 7.3 came with a black one.
Now, if we could only get a reliable black one.......
SPELLY, if you go to the sticky at the top of this 7.3 forum, there's one called "common mods" and there's a post or two in there regarding CPS replacement that you'll find helpful for your friend.
