its been over a year now since i've lasted got the fluid changed in the 96 e40d tranny and all i did last time was a fluid change where they hook up the hoses to a machine and they just wait until the fluid comes out clean. this time i wanna do a filter change.
does anybody know roughly how many qts i should buy to do this? i remember seeing way back that some of you do some weird ways to completely drain the system. is it neccessary to completely drain the system, or can i just drain out all the fluid and refill?
i should prolly change the filter cuz i don't know when was the last time it was done, prolly 3 years ago. or do you think it's ok just to change out the fluid? s
since last year, i've towed my mustang on a dolly 750 miles. well this time i'm towing my mustang on a u-haul full car transporter so it's at least another 1000 its towing but this time its going mostly downhill from utah 5000 elev to malibu ca to sea level. so it should be better than climbing hills all the time.
any help would be greatful because i plan on doing this tomorrow night after work.
well ive done a strictly filter change. the pan holds about 6-7 quarts. id pour it into something and measure it out because im not exactly sure. its pretty easy. i painted my pan while i had it off, cleaned the magnet.
well if you want to spend the money to get a complete fluid change. throw some royal purple in the bad boy. only 6-7 was for the pan only if you were just gonna change the filter and fill it back up.
My e4od has a B&M deep sump pan which is 4 extra qts. with a filter change and draining the torque converter it's 18.5 qts. so I always buy 20qts. and change the transfer case at the same time.

Whenever I do a full trans service I drain the torque converter, and change the filter. After this it will take 16 quarts of ATF to fill it.....OH BTW in my E4OD I always use Mobil-1 fully synthetic ATF or better....the synthetic fluid has been known to hold up to heat breakdown much better than non-synthetic, and anything that will keep my E4OD alive longer is for me.
