My Bronco's starter has sounded bad since I got it. It has a high pitch sound when cranking that reminds me of the old Toyota starters. So, when the Bronco didn't turn over the other day I picked up another starter. And while I was under the hood and vehicle I went ahead and upgraded all of the cables to 1 gauge and even went ahead and replaced the starter relay.
I cranked it over and the new starter sounds exactly like the old one...horrible. It does start but has a high pitch chattering sound and when you crank it over. I checked to make sure the starter was fastened securely
Any ideas on what sort of demon I have? It really sounds bad...not just annoying. You hear it and wonder what the heck is wrong.
Have you inspected the flywheel for damaged teeth? The problem may not be the starter at all especially since this is the SECOND one to make the same noise. I suggest removing the new starter and checking the contact pattern on the new Bendix gear in the starter as well. If the demarkation is not near the center of the teeth on the Bendix gear, there could be a warping problem with the flywheel as well.

I was worried it may be a flywheel problem. Taking the starter off is a real pain as I have to pull the header off to get the starter off. One more reason to have shorty headers instead of full lengths.
