brake problems

We are finally dried out in No Cal. Today I went to the dumps about 10 miles away, on the way back my brakes started losing effectiveness. A little dicey since it is downhill and curvy for part of that trip. I still have plenty of pedal pressure but just less stopping power. I have never worked on the brakes but never had to yet (owned it for about 9 months). Any ideas? 1965 F100.

Impossible to guess until you pull the drums off and have a look inside.

Time for an upgrade to power assisted dual chamber drum/drum or disk/drum brakes.

If your brakes are in good shape, and it was downhill most of the way, then you have experienced fade. William is absolutely right - you should seriously consider a disc brake upgrade as disc brakes will handle more heat than drums brakes.

If they aren't in good shape, the shoes will not be able to brake if they are contaminated with brake fluid from a leaking wheel cylinder.
Or, you could have a frozen wheel cylinder, so that you are not getting full braking.

In any case - ddavidv is right - you need to tear them down.

Good luck!

Check for a blown rear axle seal. These can coat the shoes with grease and cut the braking power down to zilch. Usually a good sign of a blown seal is a grease trail on the inside of a tire. Just something to check for.

Try sanding the drums and pads with 180 grit. Providing there is no oil contamination.
If you had some rust from the excessive humidity, it will cause the brakes to not grab but rather slide on the rust particles imbedded into the pads.
Use circular strokes and go easy on the pads.

Thanks guys. I had read about upgrades to disc brakes, but honestly my mechanic skills are pretty lean. I will make an inspection soon to see what is going on there. I appreciate the feedback.
