IDI versus Powerstroke MPG

<HR style="COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1> This is a duplicate question from the '94.5 powerstroke forum......

I am looking to buy a 1990-1994 crew cab F350 for a second truck.
I am never owned any of the Ford diesels.
I think I want an automatic for driving ease.......
I will rarely be towing anything heavy, rarely over 7-8K pounds......

I am looking for an economical engine that gets decent mileage, is reasonable to work on, as far as price of parts, and very dependable.

Would you guys reccommend the powerstroke or the 7.3 pre-powerstroke or the 6.9

I appreciate you suggestions

Thanks

I don't know that the 6.9 ever came in Ford trucks after 1988-1987. Maybe I'm wrong but I think after that Ford used the 7.3 and the later Powerstroke.

I think your right, looks like 1987 or maybe early '88 was the last year for the 6.9........just throught that in there to see........if the 6.9 fit the bill then I could just buy an older truck.........

The 6.9 was last used in 87.
As far as the cost of parts, an IDI diesel wins over any Power Stroke.
As far as easy to work on, the IDI wins again.
Dependable, the IDI wins again.

Fuel mileage is a toss up, but most Power Strokes had overdrive transmissions. The early IDI could be had only with a direct drive transmission, C 6 or T 19.
After 86 you could still find the direct drive transmissions, but there were also ZF 5 and A4OD automatics with overdrive.
With fuel mileage concerns, you are looking for a truck with an overdrive transmission.

Power
A turbocharged IDI will be close to the power of a Power Stroke.
The non turbo trucks will not be nearly as powerful.

My 93 F250 with the 7.3l turbo zf5, and 3:55 rear end beat my friends 2005 Duramax automatic by about 3mpg at 18mpg.

My 91 F350 with the 7.3l, E4OD automatic and 4:10 rear end matches my friends 2006 Duramax automatic at 15mpg. (This truck is heavier, and the low rear end combined with the automatic transmission really impact fuel economy)

Watch out if you are going to tow with the E4OD. You will need to spend some money
