If all other options and packages are the same, I'd say there's no difference. I think the FX4 package only includes Rancho "branded" shocks and skid plates. My understanding is the shocks aren't really special. They're just white with red boots. I don't think they're going to affect the ride much. I don't think there's anything else about the FX4 package that affects the suspension. As far as hitch receivers, I've got the trailer towing package and the receiver is rated for 500lbs tongue / 5,000lbs gross, I think. With a weight distributing hitch you can tow a higher gross weight. I'm not sure they have different receivers though.
I have the FX4 Package and it is no big deal it just came with the truck when I bought it. I took off the silly FX4 stickers because I can't stand stickers on paint. Like the others said they are not rancho shocks just branded that way and I guess the skid plates are nice but not for the extra money. I bought my truck used so It had what I wanted the V10 with 4:30s so I boought it.
I just picked up my 2006 f250 lariat crewcab regular 4x4 v10 today and thought it rode a little softer than the Fx4 I test drove. My hitch reciver says 600lbs tounge weight with 6000 weight carrying and 12500 weight dist. I thought it was 500 and 5000 till i looked at it...BTW LOVE THIS TRUCK!
IMO...I think the FX4 rides just a bit firmer than the regular 4x4. It has to do with the shocks...and nothing else. OBTW...the FX4 shocks are really terrible...and should be replaced.
I replaced mine with Bilsteins HD...and now really like the ride over OEM FX4 shocks.
Again...just my .02.
