I posted last week about a draging clutch problem I was having on my 1985 E150 Ford Van. It has a manual 3-speed, and someone posted they think it's a Ford 3.03. The problem I had was I could not find the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. I went ahead and ordered both the master and slave units. Looking at the new unit it is e-z to see the slave DOES have a bleed valve, but unlike any that I have seen. It looks like a set screw and it is flush with the outside surface of the slave cylinder making it hard to see installed on the van. I wanted to install a new hose with the new parts, but NAPA said the hose is a dealer item. So I went to the dealer and they said the hose is a discontinued item. So with that information I thought why not try to bleed the old system. So I bleed the old system and it shifts much better. I don't see any fluid leaks, so I will see how it works as is for a while. Thanks for the feedback last week. I will look around for a new hose. I think I can find a hose, but the end fitting are the unknow item. I might go to the wrecking yard for spare parts.
Thanks for the ID andym. The weak link on the van is the clutch/transmission/shifter. Got the van two years ago. Went thru most every thing else. Paint, brakes, tires, motor, interior....Would love to have a 5 speed with good shifter. The tree shifter is not smooth. I did put new bushings on the linkage and that fixed it from hanging up in gear, but we all know it's not like a good floor shifter. My seats spin, so a floor shifter might get in the way, but I might be able to modify the floor shifter handle.
Question: Do you know of a slam dunk, e-z swap with a 5 speed for this I6 300? I don't plan on hauling more than dirt bikes and camping gear. It's 2WD. Mazda 5 speed? Mustang 5.0 5 speed? Don't want a granny gear. I want a close ratio gear box with OD. I think the existing trans has seen better days.
Thanks ahead of time.
The M5OD would be a good swap, I think, as long as you're not going to tow much. Don't get the mustang 5 speed.
The M5OD has a bad reputation, but I think it's worse than it deserves. The biggest problem with them is that they leak fluid out the top from three rubber plugs. When they dry out, they leak. If they're replaced with steel plugs, you're fine. I still haven't figured out where to get the plugs, though.
If you keep it full of fluid, you can reasonably expect to get a couple hundred thousand out of them. They can be found in any F-150 from 1988 to 1996. Any 5-speed out of any truck will fit your 300.
Wow. Now that is what I call a slam dunk! I think the existing trans will hold out at least one year. That gives me time to shop around. Thanks for the tip on the plugs on the top. If I see one in the bone yard I will check the fluid level and for the dried out plugs. Might be common knowlege at the bony yard. Thanks again andym. Great site.
