sounds more like a car tranny than a towing tranny. Too many shifts to keep up with. The thing would wear out IMO. Might be good for cruising mileage. The most I can think of now is a 5spd manual, a 6 spd auto just dosen't seem like a good idea to me. With skyrocketing gas prices I could easily be wrong though.
Options that the F150 will need to stay in the game are a reliable 6 speed auto trans. Also a selectable full time transfer case like in the Dodge, Chevy, or the Expedition would really make the truck more usable as a daily driver. With gas prices over $3.00 a gal and the real heavy f150 frame, the more economy and options they can build in to the f150 will only help sales. Another thought, ford should get a mid sized truck in the product line up. They could call it an f100, base it on the exployer frame but longer. I know they have the sport trac but a 4.9 ft bed is smaller than the bed on the Nissan Frontier crew cab by 5 inches, I mean come on. Plus ford lists the sport trac as a suv. Why by an suv when you need a pick-up truck?
I'm not sure what they're doing with the auto's, but I can just about assure you that we've seen the end of the manuals.
Once people, myself included, give in and buy a truck with an auto. despite preference of a manual, where would the manafacturers incentive for producing them be?
I know my dealer told me that in '03 they ordered only two 150s with sticks and they had to (according to him) "about give them away" to get rid of them.
I actually already like my auto trans. and would not be inclined to go back to a stick even if they offered them.
I hate autos. If I have to order my truck with a stick to get one then taht's what I'm gonna do. People that don't like sticks generally use the truck in the city, or suburbs with dense traffic. That's fine as long as you aren't mall crusing or commuting to your office job and actually hauling something. The clutching through stop and go traffic can get a little old. But in more open areas, the stick is a lot more fun and a less costly transmission to maintain. I'd rather have a six speed manual than automatic, can you imagine what the rebuild costs on the automatic will be?

Unless things change you can "order" all you want, they simply don't make them anymore.
I to would like to see a 6 speed or 5 speed Manual in a V8 equipped F150 but those days or long gone. At this point I would just like to see a much more efficient and less power robbing transmission in the F150!!

Thats why when I was buying my '06 and seen what they wanted to give me on trade for my 95, I kept it. The '95 has the 4.9L 300 I6 & 5spd Manual which suites me fine. In fact, I am having more fun with the '95 now that It is the secondary vehicle (Work Truck). I Miss not having the Manual in '06 but I can live with it. Just going to have to keep the 95 for eve .

I had a '72 F250 4x4 with a 360 and a 4 spd manual when I was 18 years old (when I was 18 the truck was already 14 years old) and I wish I still had it. It was a long throw on the manuals back then and it didn't even have power steering.
It used regular gas and the tank was one of the old behind the seat type. It had a wooden box due to the old one basically rusting completely away, but I still remember how I enjoyed owning it.
you can still order one. It has to be a special order, but you can get 'em. Ford's not gonna get out of that tranny for good. In fact, in the muscle truck wars, they are behind because they don't have a manual in the lightning. Not having a manual even as an option is a mistake, and I doubt that ford's willing to make it, especially with rising gas costs.
In my opinion i think the 6 speed would be great for towing and for my F-150.
1) My Dad has a 2005 F-250 Diesel with a Torque Shift 5 speed auto. Interestingly, there is no lock-out button to take it out of overdrive.
2) The 6 speed in the 2007 Expedition is mated to the 300 Horsepower, 5.4L, 3 valve.
3) If my memory serves me correctly, you can manually shift this 6 speed auto.
4) Where i live, many people use their SUV's to drive their kids to school and soccer practice and then on the weekend, hookup the trailer and go camping. I think Ford knows this and will build this tranny tough to take the abuse.
