Allright, I got the L rear panel in my 98 Exp EB off and removed the subwoofer enclosure. I bought a panel/door removal tool from PepBoys that helped. The subwoofer came out easily after taking out the rear bolt. There is an amp attached to the enclosure just like others have said. I am going to put a new subwoofer in the same enclosure and use the same amp unless someone thinks this is a terrible idea. I just need some bass.

You should be fine if you are using the same type of sub (wattage, etc) as the factory sub you are replacing. You would run into the problem trying to connect that amp to a higher wattage sub. Hope that helps, I am by no means an expert, but I just recently encountered the same situation. Have a good weekend!
Finished the saga of the subwoofer. I replaced the factory subwoofer with a stage Rockford Fosgate Punch 8". It fit nicely but I had to drill new holes into the plastic enclosure because it didn't line up with the old ones. Also there was spot for the rear screw that secured the factory subwoofer. I hooked it back up to the factory amp and it sounds good. Thanks for all the help.
I know this isnt answering the question, but i went the other route,, after replacing the headunit and speakers, the factory sub sounded like crap, so i installed a 10" kicker L5 solobaric with a 400watt @2ohms kicker amp. the amp was small enough to fit under the second row seat and still allow the seats to fold. The sub is in a box in the back of the truck (03 EB expy). The sub is a monster, about 100 times louder then the factory sub. anyway this is the first thread ive seen where someone was able to replace the sub and use the factory amp,,,heard horror stories about that aamp so thats why i went with the external amp n sub.
