I just recently bought a distributor, and i had a brain fart and bought an HEI distributor instead of a regular plug-in one. Its for my 79 f250 that has a 460....i have the standard distributor in there now, and im wondering how you convert the plug from the standard to the HEI....or however you make an HEI distributor work where a regular one was originally
jsut curious, where did you get your HEI and did it have a ford shaft on it. I am considering this conversion for my 79 4x4 supercab with a 400. I look forward to watching this thread. Sorry I can't help.
Here u guys go..i think thats the right link...im powerstrokes friend and i was confused as well when i went to install the distributor.....i just searched 460 distributors on ebay and the hei's popped up......
there are a couple of companies that make HEI distributors for ford engines. ive thought about going that route myself a few times. Have to get the new tranny in first though.
if you already have the duraspark/electronic ignition then the wires should be the same. When I put in the HEI in my 460, I had points so I had to use the wires for the electronic ignition, the male-type terminals. Ive had it on for about a year and its worked great. No spark knock, flawless. Only thing, when you install it, you may have to mess with the temperature sender and fittings b/c its an awfully tight fit. and also its very close to the t-stat housing, so if ya wanna change your thermo, you gotta pull the dist.

if you are talking about wiring the distributor itself, i believe you just run a 12volt (with the key on) wire to the (1 of 3) connectors on the cap, the other terminals are for the module (in the distributor) and a tach if you have one
One of the site sponsors, Performance Distributor, has both types of distributors (HEI and Duraspark), available for our trucks. Whenever I need to replace my distributor, I'll probably look at going with one of their Duraspark units.
i've ran a pro comp for a little bit and everytthing has gone as planned so far. I had problems with my points one that someone installed. The pro comp has the 2 piece shaft so you wont loose your spot, so if you need to take the distributor out, timing can only be 180deg incorrect or correct.(i think old mopars were like this too, maybe)
