Ok, I finally got around to installing a Banks Power Elbow/downpipe and Magnaflow exhaust. I also have the NAPA 6637 filter on an otherwise stock 7.3 . Does the computer have the capacity to re-learn now that I have freed up the intake and exhaust? I am very sensitive to my MPG these days and if I didn't know better, I'd swear it's getting worse MPG. Is this a myth or can I disconnect the batteries for a minute and essentially start over and have the computer "learn" anew? Thanks. PS I've posted this on another diesel forum, but received only one reply. I guess it wasn't what I wanted to hear.
From what I understand, it will begin anew with a stock program and adjust from there. Don't know that it will change much though, because I think it simply responds to inputs from sensors. It will clear trouble codes though.
It re-learns every time you drive it. Resetting it only accelerates the process. Tenn01 is correct though...it will not make a huge difference unless you drastically alter your driving style.
actually, yes. undo BOTH batteries for about a half hour or so. then unplug them. you can either re-learn it by grannying it around for a while, or running the **** out of it. some people like to do that when they think their chips have grown a little "soft" and they feel they lost some power. brings it right back.

After I put my exhaust and intake on my gas millage went down to. It started running rough. After I reset the computer it ran smooth again ut gas millage never improved. I changed the Fuel filter yesterday and it was dirty so maybe that was the problem. When was the last time yours was changed?

The fuel filter was changed out less than 5k ago. I recently took an 800 mile round trip and I averaged 18.2. Just like always. Looks like it may be time for a chip or tuner.
From the problems that I had had with mine in the last two weeks, yes, that dang computer can learn and it can learn quite well.
My wife drove the truck for a week to work.
When I took it on a distant trip, I knew something was wrong. Thre was nothing there. At my stop point, the first thing I did was disconnect both batteries and I let it set for about an hour. I hooked the batteries back up and immediately hit the interstate to continue the trip, man it was sick, it took about ten minutes of pounding then all of a sudden, it realized the old man was driving and not the woman.
It responded. It is now back to the way I like it.
Still trying to figure out how to keep the woman out of it.
If your getting 18 mpg, and that is what your concerned with, leave it alone. I don't know about the computer re-learning but installing a tuner will lower your milage.
I have a predator set on economy tune 60 hp. I get around 15 mpg. I can get a little better with the stock setting. I leave it there because I like the power.
I doubt a chip will get better milage unless it de-tunes the engine.
If you open it up and let it breath a little better, the mileage will go up. I am averaging 21 mph with an open exhaust, banks intercooler and a modified oem airbox (waiting on the AIS II - no bucks at this time for it). Now that 21 is keeping my foot out of it (keeping tach under 2100).
If you put a tuner on it that you cannot change, you will loose mpg, but make great power. I am planning on having Jody fix me one up that is switchable.
It's not the 7.3, it's the 4R100 that the pcm has adaptive learning stratedgy programming.
The software that runs the 4R100 behind a gas engine has adaptive, but they never put that in the software that runs the 4R100 behind the 7.3L. And yes, the software is very different.
There is no learning on a 7.3L or on a 4R100 that is attached to a 7.3L.
And don't quote me the owner's manual. It is only right for the gas trucks, it isn't right for the diesel.

Ok, then perhaps you can explain what exactly the pcm stores in the KAM (Keep Alive Memory)?
