Shorter seats???

I bought a seat out of a mid 60's F100 (which I believe now may not be original). After I installed it in my 72 I noticed that it felt different. I realized that it appeared shorter. I measured the old seat- it was 62" across, the "new" one I installed measures 57 1/2". It bolts up perfect, but was two seat sizes common, or could this be a car seat? Thanks!

Shorter seats???

I don't really know the answer for sure, but it occurs to me that one of two things is going on. You either have a car seat, like you mentioned, or the earlier F series trucks had shorter seats. I suggest posting a question on the 61-66 board asking someone to measure their seats. That should tell you what you have.

Shorter seats???

Gary, I have a 76 seat in my 66 that bolted up in the same holes, but hit the arm rest if I don't open both doors when swinging the back forward. I'd say you are on to something.

John, in that case I'm guessing that the mid 60s seat were a little shorter. When I sit down I'm still centered. My steering column leans to the left a little. Is there a way to fix that? I've tried adjusting it but no luck so far.

Steering Column Angle
I have had two 67 F-100 Camper Specials and both steering columns were angled to the left. I can't imagine this was a engineering decision. I think it was probably just a mistake. Too bad you noticed it; now it will start bothering you, getting under your skin, gnawing at you...

Shorter seats???

My seat in my 68 F250 is about 60" across. As far as I know it is original. Too bad I am 68" tall or I might have a nice bed to sleep on when I get kicked out of the house for working on it too much! LOL :P

Fraid not, you'll just have to look ahead out of the windshield and not let it worry you.

On the steering column, I guess you're right and it does bother me, but not too seriously! That is interesting about the seats though.

The cabs got wider in 67, but I have no idea what year the seats were made wider.

i went to the local junkyard and pulled the seat from a totaled 2001 F150, and after a few slight mods, it bolted right in.... however, something you need to think of when you change a seat is the seat height in relation to the seat belts, with the older model seats, the clearance is usually shorter than the newer model seats. sometimes, you'll find yourself in the junkyard again looking for longer seatbelts.

Aaron, which seat did you get?,solid bench
or the 40/20/40?. How did you modify it?
Original seat tracks or the 2001 tracks?.
I've been trying to do this to my 1970, but
the later models set too high on the 1970
tracks for me. Do you have any detailed
photos of the interior or the seats?.
Thanks, Nibog.

nibog>> the seat is a full bench from a 2001, complete with the tracks, and it pretty much bolted right up. I had to go into the woodshop and fabricate some oak spacers to ensure the seat fit nice and snug, and i had to drill some holes in my brand new floorboards. I dropped in some grade 8 bolts with lock washers and it's solid as the original. The only thing i kinda don't dig is that the seat has highback headrests on each sides, so it makes it a bit hard to see out the rear glass.
