Nomadic,
Most lime products come in a pelletized form (dust free). Just use a spreader like any other lawn product. (avoid drop spreaders if you can, too easy to dump too much in one spot). Lime will dry your skin out, and if you have a cut or open sore that the lime gets in, it will burn as if you poured lemon juice on it. Other then that it is pretty harmless. If you are using a non-pellatized type and there is alot of dust, then use a dust mask to filter out the air you breathe. The lime dries your skin due to the moisture absorbing properties of the lime, not due to any chemicals.

I use the weed and feed type fertilizers( good results with Vigaro, trying Scotts now) regularly and a Weed Wolf weed puller for spot weeding. I also will use lawn weed spray(usually 2 4 D based) when the weeds are most active. That knocks them down but not quite out.

Roudnup is for killing everything. I would not spray it on my lawn unless I wanted to kill all the grass.

I also use Triox spray for parts of the yard and driveway cracks where I don't want anything to grow for a year.

Preen or Casoron for weed prevention in garden or dirt spots where I don't want weeds to grow. These will not kill weeds already there, use roundup for those or a spot weed spray.

Just my methods for managing my grass.

NUmber one dont areate in the spring because if you do you just lost your preemerge weed control. number 2 make sure its a core plugger and not a spiker. the main reason why you do this is to get rid of compaction. not thatch. it does help promote a good root system. if you need to get rid of the thatch then get a dethatching machine.

1 mow at the right height. dont scalp the yard. if you do your just wasting time on everything else.
2 pre emerge in early spring
3 broadleaf weedcontrol now. i.e confront is the product i use and it is ten times better that scotts turf builder
4 dont use a triple 10 fertilizer or a triple 17. they release way to much to fast and those are more for agri.
5 dont water at night or in the afternon. only in the morning hours. then you wont wonder why your yard has fungus.
6. overseed lime in the fall.

there are a few more things i could add but i dont want to give all of my secrets away. then i would be out of business
