OMG guys you should see my yard right now. What have I done..... WE needed to dig a drain to stop the leaking into the basement. Well we finally got around to doing it.
We didn't have much grass in the front yard before due to a couple of big trees that block out the sun. One of those is coming done soon. But that is a different issue. We rented a mini backhoe to dig down about three feet, I'm glad we did there was an awful lot of tree roots we went through. What grass we did have is now gone, it is now a mix of dirt and gravel.
My dad and I want to put a layer of topsoil down to level out the yard. After doing that should we fertilize the yard and seed it; or should we llok into putting down sod? How much does sod run? Any tips or pointers you guys might have, would be appreciated?
Absolutely, before you start, sit down and drink a couple o' rounds and say to yer self, "self, what's the point in doing this?" After that, if the reasons are good enough, put in enough topsoil to level the yard out,(not less than two inchesand either hydro seed (preferred) or buy the sod from a sod farm. They'll give you the cost over the phone for the square feet needed.
I'd go sod. My sucess with seed and fertilizer is less than sterling. Even if it does come in, the weeds come in with it. Get some buddies to help you roll it out, and you're gonna be fine.
Sod is not a substitute for soil prep nor will it thrive if your lawn doesn't have the right growing conditions. It needs sun, water and nutrients just like grass grown from seed. Sod is fine if you're willing to spend the money to on it, but it only provides instant turf instead of waiting for grass to grow in from seed. Regardless of whether you seed or sod, if your yard needs top soil, add it.
I'm not saying it's a cure-all, but it does a heck of a lot better in rainy situations, and you get less weeds growing up with the grass. Looks to me that he's already doing the topsoil.
Amish77 you got it right; we are planning on putting down topsoil. On my next day off I'm going to go down to the coop ext office and get some recommendations from then as to what mix works best in this area. Thanks for the replies so far guys.
One thing I do when I plant grass seed is cover the whole area with straw. Not only does it stop the birdies from eating it, but it keeps in the heat and moisture so you don't have to water it as much.
