Upper control arm bolts

There are 4 bolts on upper control arm brakets. Who knows its size? It seems to me 10 mm, but what is the step? I want to replace all the fasteners, but I want to buy it here, to wait from USA is to long... As i can see all the fasteners in aero is of the European metric standard. But I can not drive my van without bolts, so how can I see it size?

Thanks!

The N8036775150 bolts are 15 mm diameter, 190 mm long (don't know the thread), and there are 3 on each side of the van. The N804386-5140 bolts are smaller and much shorter. I just assembled mine with them, so I can't measure them (I'd rather not take them out again). Can you pull them out to check? The very front one (N804386-5140) can be easily removed from the top. The very rear one can be removed with a little manipulation of the control arm assembly.

One of them is easy to remove, but the other is under the arm axe.... I dont want to remove them, till I have new bolts. How can I drive without bolts to a shop?

I got mine from a bolt dealer. They were 7$ for the Bolts and 3 $ for the Nuts. At Ford 22$ a piece. The dealer knew the ones I needed. Because the Ford dealers get them from him and double the price.

Pablo,

Do NOT drive the van without all 3 long bolts properly torqued! They hold the front crossmember to the frame. Two major components, the engine and front suspension, are mounted onto the crossmember.

Is there any reason you want to replace them? As long as they are not damaged or badly rusted, they should be re-usable. So whatever service you want to perform which requires removing them, you can do so, and then re-install them.

slightly off topic: is the FTE site under heavier use than before? I keep getting errors saying "page unavailable" when trying to open messages. If I retry long enough, I eventually get the page to display. But the funny thing is the first advertisement at the top of the page never fails to show up (we all know how important that must be); just no real forum contents. (I may not be able to respond to follow-ups because of this problem.)

Yes! I have to open page from the 3-5 try! FTE is overloaded! Moderator! Help!!!! Please!

As I've understood, the nut is under the spring (?). I cant properly torque these bolts. What a wrench is used to do it? It seems to me, nut rotates with bolt! May be I have to remove a spring before?

The nuts are accessible from underneath the lower control arm....it takes a deep socket and lots of muscle. The torque is over 150 ft lbs.

Moderators experience the same thing. We are not exempted from overloading. See how democratic we are?

On torquing the bolts, be very very careful. Use a deep socket, and stay away from any thing that can fall on you. It takes a lot of torque and the van may slip off the jackstand while you are pulling on the torque wrench.

If I remember correctly, I had my brother hold the top of the bolt with a wrench (it doesn't take much force to hold it there due to friction) and I pulled on the torque wrench underneath, all the while keeping arms and feet out of the way the best I could.

Wink

I just did mine last week. You need a metric deep socket (24mm) to grab the large nut from the bottom. You will definitely need some kind of bead breaker or long handle to crack those nuts. It takes a while to undo them because of the rust, tight space and the socket coming undone often. But you will get there.

Here's the best adivce I can give you. Take a closeup picture of the control arm assembly after you remove it and before you start dissassembling it. Refer to the picture often while you reassemble. That will save you a lot of hassle and mistakes. The other thing you will need is a ball joint press. I used Auto Zone's loaner to press the bushings back into the control arm bracket. That makes it fairly straight forward with the right size of fitting.

I also changed out the ball joints too. That was much easier than I thought. Drilling out the rivets takes time and sweat.

Good luck.

I replaced bolts by new ones. Original bolts were 15 mm, but I purchaised 16 mm bolts from Gaselle truck and I now I'm sure, I can nol miss my crossmember.
It was difficult! Parts of aero are heavy, but I belive this gymnastics is usefull for my health!

Thanks to all!
