Simply greening the engine compartment today and had my 6637 off . Had buddy jump in truck, start then stop engine while i counted how long it took for the turbo to stop spinning. cold engine from idle it took 12 seconds. stck turbo with 150,000 on it. Whats normal? No bearing play to concearn me yet and fins look brand new!. Also over time the turbo has seemed to have turned more of a yellowish color. More so on the side closest to the exhaust wheel. Is this an issue with heat once generated thru this turbo or from heating up then cooling down over 150,000 miles?
it really doesnt matter ... they all do the same thing, ... coast to a stop. make sure you let the engine idle for 3 minutes after working it hard and coming to a stop. this gives the turbo bearings time to cool and preventing coking the oil around the bearing surfaces.
3 minutes may be a little too much. the rule i use is 300* post turbo and 400* pre-turbo. i let mine get to 375* pre-turbo and then shut it off. you only need to get below the flashpoint of the oil, which is normally 460*F when new and around 410*F when it's time for a change. before my rebuild (the guy before me obviously didn't let his cool down), it would spin 6-8 seconds from an minute's idle. completely rebuilt with new bearings, it now takes 11-13 seconds to stop. my teacher did drop a shaft bearing and it rolled across the floor, dont know if that had anything to do with it. checked it and it looked good. micropolished the shaft with toothpaste and it's shiney and smooth.
as far as my yellowish coloring on my compressor side nearest the exhuast side(in the middle), is it normal. It looks as if garret coated the turbo with an anti corrosin substance.

When I bought my truck the engine was dirty and greasy BUT... The turbo was not discolored. After the full detail they did., (steam clean and put that shinny dressing all over) A few days later I noticed The compressor side turning yellow too.
Your starting line in this post was: 'Simply greening the engine compartment today' Does this mean your were cleaning the engine with simple green?
If you are getting it on the turbo housing this is probly the color change you are seeing.
I cleaned mine off with a brake clean spray with the engiine off and cold. That got most of it off but still have some discoloring.
Totally off subject, but when I worked for the Forest Service in Fire we were told to discontinue the use of Simple Green due to it causing testicular cancer. Don't know how true it is and it was a couple of years ago.
