Hello. Does anyone have a suggestion on how best to change out my tranny fluid. How much fluid does one hold anyways and what's the best way to fill it after everythings been cleaned..thanks
depends... if you just want to change the filter and some of the fluid just drop the pan change the filter and poer the new fluid down the dip stick... or you can go to an oil change station and have them do a complet change ( i think its called an "trany evac") costs about 60 to 80 bucks and that dosent include a filter change.
I just did mine. Pulled the pan, changed the screen, and drained the torque converter. I even blew out the oil cooler. I used almost 12 quarts of fluid.
The only way to put it back in is through the dipstick tube. Take one of those tranny funnels from your favorite parts house and a clothes hanger or some wire and hang it from your hood reinforcements.
You know that is alot of fluid. Especially if you consider if it gets only 1.5-2 quarts low you can start burning clutches and stuff. Wild I never realized there was that much fluid in there.
Just changed mine in my 98 Grand Cherokee. Disconnected one of the lines to the cooler - ran a clear ½" tube 3 ft long to an empty 1 gallon milk jug. Had my girlfriend start the car, put in N and waited until it filled approx ½ a gallon. Had her immediately shut the key off. Then added two quarts to the filler tube. Did this for around 12-14 quarts. Then connected the cooler. Ran the car for a bit and topped the tranney off. Worked very well.
Yeah, Scotty- I had to double check. I think alot of it depends on the oil cooler you use, whether you use the one in the radiator or an add-on. My Chilton calls for 12 3/4 qts (25.5 pints).
I was just agreeing with you, Scotty- that's all, buddy. I thought it was alot, too. I was just relating the amount of fluid to the size of the pan. I guess when you look at the whole trans, it kinda makes sense.
