I have a friend with a single plain on a 400 cant say
the brand here though, it'll haul major butt when it's in
the high rpm range, but the car can barely pull its self
onto a ramp type hoist without stalling or lugging at
low rpm. dual plain is more torque and hp lower down.
It really depends on the intake, the Holley and Edelbrock streetmaster are single plane low rpm intakes with small runners. The Edelbrock Victor is a single plane that is VERY high rpm. You really have to look at the rpm range of the intake.
For most FE's the edelbrock RPM is an excellent choice dual plane. Otherwise the stock S code iron 390 GT intake is about the same as the edelbrock performer intake and works very well on the street and can be had for < $80.
An intake manifold is designed to work best at set rpm's. Also they are designed as part of a package- if you replace a intake manifold by its self you will se results, but if you change the cam with it as part of a package you will be much happier.
