A 4.56 rear will make it seem like it has more power (spin the tires easier)--and since you just drive to Home Depot and back--mileage won't suffer and maybe improve. A good used rear end goes for $200 in my area--that's pretty cheap "power"--Mike
Im doing a pretty good build on my 360, a 300 dollar edelbrock intake, 300 dollar carb, headers, good ignition system should give u some fun, granted u dont have any serious mechanical problems (bad rings, bearing, valves, etc). A basic build isnt too bad to the wallet (depends on who the person is, being a college student, it still aint cheap lol). My motor consists of (rigt now) all machine work done (bored, honed, block checked, crank cut, rods reconditioned, aligh honed, heads cut for larger valves, hardened exhaust seats, bronze guides); stock replacement cam; ported and polished heads; cobra jet size valves; cast aluminum pistons; port matched headers; and a list of miscellaneous tricks i learned from an experienced race motor builder. My truck stock with dual exhaust and a 4 speed was a tire fryer. Simple bolt ons will help you a lot.
OK, I am going to put in a 4 barrel intake and carburator and an electronic ignition system, if I am happy with that I will stop.
I appreciate the great advice from everyone I just hate walking into a auto shop and being quoted 3-8 grand. I will take before and after pics.
Fling is telling you to have a compression test done before you put any more money into a intake, carb. and electronic ign. because if your engine fails the compression test then its worn out and nothing but a rebuild is going to fix it. If it needs a rebuild and you have already spent your money then you can't get it rebuilt first. This is why I asked you in a earlier post how many miles are on this engine and I didnt get a reply. I also noticed no one advised you to get a full and complete brake check first. The new manifold ,carb. and ign. will make it run like you want it to but it won,t stop it. JMO Charles
I think if you do anything to the motor, at least install a new timing chain or confirm that yours is not stretched.
How many miles are on the motor?
Has it ever rebuilt?
Ken
Gottcha! I just went and checked the mileage 17678 so I am asumming it has rolled over once. I do not believe it has been rebuilt but I will confirm that with the friend I bought it from.
Good call on the brake inspection! LOL yes I will do that!
Ok the compression is good. Now how do I determine what intake manifold and which carburator will fit my engine? How do I know what RPM range to get for a 360? ANy suggestions on brands or suppliers? New vs. Used?
Also, any suggestions on brands of electronic ignitions?
With a older stock bottom end I,d go for a S code oem steel manifold or the Edlebrock performer. Both are good for off idle to 5500rpm. The oem will be cheaper but heavier if you can find one. I put 5000rpm as the limit on mine and dont want to hit that. On the carb. I used the Holley 4160, 600cfm vac sec. with the Ford auto tranny kick down on it. Mine runs great and gets good mileage when I keep my foot out of it. JMO Charles
You can spend a lot of money on the engine trying to get it to smoke the tires but if you don't have the right gears it won't happen. What rear end gears do you have? If you want a tire smoker think about 4.10's or 4.56's
