Smile I Need More Power!!!

Ok.. my 1972 F250 has a 360, I know just enough to change the oil and spark plugs, what can I do to increase the horse power? Anyone done this before?

Thanks,
Peter

Well Peter, welcome to the site, how much power are you looking for? If you are not out to do a rebuild you may want to start with a new 4v carb and manifold and a set of headers with duel pipes. Just a place to start IMHO. Allen

OK, this will be no help, but there is an old saying: "speed costs money, how fast do you want to go." But be more specific, do you want more top end speed, more low end grunt for towing or hauling, or what?

I Need More Power

My truck has headers on it and I replaced all of the hoses. Should I replace the core, inake manifold and carb. or drop in a good 390? I dont want to spend more than $3, 000.

How many miles are on this engine?
Is it all stock inside the engine?
What transmission?
For $3000.00 you can have a cam, 4 barrel carb. and 4 barrel intake installed for you.
The built 390 is going to exceed your budget if you have it done.
Just the carb and intake with your headers will wake that 360 up enough to smoke a lot of tires. JMO Charles

390 would a quick simple drop in but a 460 would get you more power and alot more performance parts available for even more upgrades later.

A good tune up, and an upgrade to electronic ign. might give you the most bang for the buck. A Petronix will cost about a hundred bucks, not sure about a durispark.

Any ol 360 worth it salt should roll the tire. You may have to hold the brake and keep mashing the gas until it happens. That aint nearly as important to me as getting good mpgs so I don't worry about it.

Good point on the tuneup, more power plus it will save on fuel. All of mine vehicles are stock except for the 67 Mustang.

Question

Ok so if I go the route of having the 4 barrel carb. and 4 barrel intake installed, are there any brand recomendations? Holley, Edelbrock?

Could I hold off on the cam and do it later if I still wasn't satisfied?

Please explain why an electronic ignition would have a noticable effect on performance.

I gather from this you are concerned about takeoff power. I also gather topend is probably not much of a concern. You could go with a lower rearend gear to get more takeoff with the power you have. Ofcourse that would take some from your topend. With the lower gear it will pull better too.

I put a 4 barrel on my truck and didn't notice any change. Rebuild the engine to run a 4 barrel and you may have a different deal.
