Update on broken glow plug.
I have not been able to post for a while, so I thought I would share my info with you all.
My 88 7.3 had a "snapped off" glow plug at the rear cylinder. It was broken at the thread so the "business portion" is still in there. We tried left drilling and "easy-out" but there was nothing easy about it.
My mechanic called in a guy who was good at this, and told us to leave it alone as there was damage around it, and the head would most likely need replacement. It does not seem to matter a great deal at this moment. It is still sealed, and since I put a new glow plug controller and 7 new beru's in there she starts quite well.
Any ideas how hard it is to pull those "heads" off? I think I would prefer to replace them both and the gaskets as the CDR was spraying a fair bit of oil in. I am the new third owner so it could have for a while and from what you have all taught me, that causes eccessive heat at the rear cylinders. "I wonder why that glow plug seized?"
Thanks all!
Mark.
Maybe over torque and no anti seize is why it stuck. ????
I'm sure there will be more ideas from others. Good luck with it.
You ca actually pull the engine, replace the head gaskets and reinstall it in the same amount of time. You will also have a much easier time and get a better job doing it out of the truck. The heater and AC on the passenger side of the engine are right in the way, you can not remove a couple of the back bolts because of it. They need to be lifted up and held with pieces of fuel line and come out with the head. Reinstall has to be done the same way. To easy to damage or displace the head gasket while trying to put the head back in place.
I was thinking along the lines of Dave and Bigredtruckmi. It would seem that since I was going to all that trouble, why not pull the engine and go through other things as well.
She only has 137,000 km on her, but since I have not had her since new it would be a good idea to do a mini overhaul. The engine starts well for now, and since I'm a little out of pocket buying it, and spending some coin getting it up to speed, I think I will have to wait until the summer.
Either way, I will keep you up to date.
Thanks!
Mark.
