Went to change oil today only to have the oil fill cap ratchet mechanism fail resulting in the lid spinning without loosening the actual cap.
Pried off the ratchet cap and loosened the fill cap with a pair of water pump pliers.
The question: any good aftermarket ideas or do I just buy a new oil fill cap from the dealer?
Been there. I just reused the bottom piece of the old cap. The top should pop back on but you will probably have to pull it back off everytime you want to change the oil. The cap sticks so back on my old 300 i6 it takes a pair of channell locks everytime you want to get that one off. I just pull the top off use the pliers then after reinstalling the cap I click the top back on. Just my .02. Hope it helps.
i'd just get a new one. or check the salvage yards for a superduty one with the long neck and give them your broken one to fill the hole in the engine.
Seems to me they're about $7 at the stealership; quit worrying about it & drop a dime.
Are you saying I am cheap!?!?
I stopped by today and paid $5.75 for a new one.
I was fine with that price, but I admit to being concerned that it might have beeen $15-20.
I guess the fact that it is only 6 bucks explains why they break so easy.
I'm cheap! I JB welded mine back together. Best stuff since bailing wire. Also used it to fix my radiator. The little nipple that connects tp the hose that connects to the reserve broke. I just JB welded that sucker right back on.

i second this for 2 reasons.
easier to fill
and if you ever decide to put an i/c on your psd you will already have the long one

Man, I got robbed!!!?!! I should demand a refund!! Actually, I think this is just about the only inexpensive part you can find at the stealership. I recently bought o-rings for the CCV box on the driver's side; over $4ea for the small ones under the screw heads!!!
