Does a C6 need a beefup kit?

I am building a 410 motor and have a stock C6 trans to go behind it. I have seen that B&M make a total trans kit for the C6 for about $200.

The motor is going to have around 400/hp and 425/ft lbs if you need to know.

So the first question is does it need to be beefed up and if so is this a good kit or do you know of a better one?

Thumbs up

Well as far as kits go I dont know if the B&M is good or not, I did use a TCI kit a while back and it was ok. However the kits sold at bulkpart.com were actually much better, and cheaper too. B&M and TCI are both rather costly for what you get. There are things you can do to the C-6 that will make it alot beefier that are not included in a kit. Generally speaking you want to have 5 clutches in the forward, low/reverse, and direct drums. So I'll list off waht I did to my C-6 in the order from cheapest to more costly.

1. Remove the wave plate in the forward clutch and replace it with a friction plate, this will give 5 frictions in the forward improving holding capacity. *freee*

2. Replace the one way sprag with the updated plastic cage type used on the later model E4OD, this increases holding capacity and reliability. $15.00

3. Replace the #9 thrust washer with a needle bearing kit (broaderperformance carries these cheap) The #9 thrust will always crap out under heavy load, a needle bearing is the only way to go. $35.00

4. for better holding in the second gear position one can use an extra wide band, or an R-code servo, higher ratio servo lever or a combination of those. I would reccomend a regular band and a higher ratio servo lever, most cost effective route. $50.00

5. Transgo valvebody reprograming kit, if you wish to change shift points and up the pressure a bit. $43.00

6. For better holding in third gear the direct drum needs 4-5 clutches, while most stock C-6's have 3-4 clutches getting a 5th into the drum will usually require machining, unless your lucky enough to have a drum with 5 clutches already. (broaderperformance carries pre-machined drums with drain holes) Also adding drain holes to the direct drum can help with lube distribution. $80.00

7. And a rebuild kit with red-eagle frictions and kolene blue steels from bulkpart, complete with all the gaskets and seals needed. $140.00

8. And if you want to up the durability of the tranny a little more (although its prolly not needed) you can get the full wide-ratio gear set from Ford with the needle bearing set included, the needle bearing set included here covers the #9-#2 I think, the #1 is only for setting endplay. 400.00 (very expensive, prolly not worth it.)

And finally setting the proper end play is important, a fully rollarized c-6 can have tighter end play than a non roller C-6, and clutch clearances are also important.

Also broader sells a full rebuild kit custom tailored to hold 500HP. "This kit includes all friction and steel plates, selective style steel plates, stepped pressure plate to add 1 extra friction in your direct drum, Carbon/Kevlar flex band, all gaskets and seals, #9 needle bearing kit, F ratio servo lever, complete thrust washer kit with selective, 5 stage shift kit, vacuum modulator, pump bushing, extension housing bushing, chrome oil pan with drain plug and our new technical manual with several color photos and modifications explained even for the novice builder." $355.00 (prolly the best deal).

Oy I went long winded again, sorry. I used both broader and bulkpart when I did my C-6 and have been very happy with their service and quaility, and now my tranny runs like a beast X_x.

No problem. I do tend to wayy overbuild things however. So for most applications 4 clutches in the direct drum is all thats really needed. And the full roller set offered in fords wide ratio kit is definitly overkill since the #9 thrust is the only one thats really under alot of load most of the time (mine was totally wiped out when I redid my tranny, but all the other thrusts were in good shape). So the stock c-6 planetaries should hold up fine for your application. Anyway good luck on your build up

What about the forged, lined and ground intermediate band instead of that flex band for strength? This band can be relined and was availabe back in the 60's for a couple of years.
What's your opinion on the amount of horsepower absorbed by a C-6?
This must vary with rpm's and horsepower applied to the transmission.

I've used both the B&M and TCI kits and IMO the B&M kits are by far the better choice. The B&M kits far outlasted the TCI ones I've used. And to the doubters yes these were similar type applications and HP comparisons.
