Hey all,
I'm certain this has been posted boo-koo times, but I'd like to get some confirmation on my problem, plus opinions on some things I've read in the posts.
Truck is a 1980 F-150, 302, C-6 auto. Over the last few days, when starting the truck in the morning I have to wait a couple of minutes with the tranny in drive before my truck moves.Reverse is no problem, just 1, 2, and drive. No more than 5 minutes and I'm moving.Yesterday afternoon I put some lucas tranny stuff in as a temp fix.
I replaced the filter, gasket and pan fluid last month, with Type F fluid. The fluid was recomended by a local ford fanatic. The truck ran fine until this week. I found an owners manual and it says to use dexron 2 in the tranny. I don't know the maintainence history of the truck, but I'm presuming it was nada. I'm thinking that I now have a Type F and dexron mix.
Heres what I want to do, feel free to offer opinions:
1. Flush out all the tranny fluid(including converter)
2. Replace the filter and pan gasket
3. Put dexron 2 (or better) back in
4. Change the modulator while I'm at it
5. Start saving for a rebuild/new tranny
In this forum, I read where someone put brake fluid in the mix to unharden the seals. Does anyone have direct experience in doing this? How much to add? I've also noted pros and cons regarding tranny flushes, but I'm going to roll the dice and spring for one anyways.
You have hard forward clutch seals or worn forward drum slip rings. Putting type F fluid in was a mistake but it didn't cause your problem. An overhaul is likely the only real fix.
where are you located...i have a rebuilt c-6 out of an 80 f-150 with a 302 with less than 20k miles ill sell to you....i have motor and tranny in garage and do not need both rebult w/less than 20k
no, i was going to put a good set of aftermarket heads and cam on the fresh bottom end, and convert my 87 back to carb, but i decided to stay efi and build from there. this is a 2wheel drive c-6, i need to mention the trucks got a 9'' rear with 2.75 gears that was rebuilt with the motor and tranny. The old man i bought the truck from in Newberry was going restoring the whole truck when he says the inside of the cab burned up. I actually bought the truck cause it had a good '93 bed on it, but had to pull the motor and tranny when i found they were rebuilt. anyway id let the whole truck with the 302 and c-6 in the bed go for 500.00. im in Lexington by the way
