95 5.0 pan replacement ?s

So after many tedious hours under my truck in the drive, I got the pan out.
Question one: How do I know when the oil pump shaft is in correctly?
Question two: When I removed the exhaust manifolds, there were no gaskets. Do I reinstall with or without gaskets?

BTW this is one monster of a job.
Thanks
Al

I did the pan in my 88, a real PITA and I did it on a hoist. Now I need to do the same on my 96 - I'll borrow my buddy's hoist again. The oil pump shaft should sit in the hex pocket on the pump- my opnion I always put a new oil pump on while I had the pan off. Seeing as how the manifolds are 11 years old I would use gaskets as they could be warped a little.

If you're replacing the pump, you need to remove the distributor so you won't have to fight the shaft going in. Or if you don't want to, just rotate the pump shaft a little at a time until it engages into the distributor. If it's not aligned, the pump will not mate with the block, just keep rotating a little at a time til it slides in.

The exhaust in newer trucks don't use gaskets. The pipe is flared and so is the manifold to eliminate the old doughnut gaskets. Just make sure you tighten them up evenly on each stud.

My bad, I thought he was talking about the manifold to head mating surface - what he said about the exhaust y-pipe connection.

He may have. After reading again, he did say manifolds. If you did remove the manifolds from the heads, then use gaskets. I've seen most of the new first time removed manifolds don't have gaskets because they are nice clean machined fit. But like Man said, 11 years old, you probably don't have that surface anymore.

and put a new pickup in with the new pump.

try putting the pump on when the oil pan is off, just to see how it feels /looks when on properly.

this will help when you have to do it with the oil pan laying on crossmember.

Ok, well it was hard enough just to get the pump bolted back up inside the pan with one hand and without being able to see it going in(while on my back). It seemed as if the shaft wasn't binding on anything while going in. Is there a way to check that the dist. is turning the pump?
The gaskets I am refering to are between the block and exhaust manifold. I'll pick some up along with some manifold studs. Do auto parts sell ex manifold bolt kits?
Thanks
Al

I was just rereading the directions on removal of the oil pan. Am I correct in thinking that I didn't have to remove the pump itself, but only the pickup tube? In that case, I will install the new pump before I put the pan up. That will make things a lot easier.
If I am correct, please let me know.
I won't be able to work on it for a couple days so not in a big hurry.

nope, both have to be laying in the pan.

it is not too bad to do just a pain in the ***.

do not forget the little gasket on the pickup.

i suggested putting pump on just so you can see and feel how it looks when it is on correctly.

Just for future references, I was able to install the new pump before putting the pan up. I had just enough clearance. Then bolted pickup on after pan was in place above crossmember.
Also noticed while looking things over a crack in my cross member where the pivot bracket bolts on. Problems, problems, problems...
