Hot fuel return valve-Really needed

I have an 84 f350 crewcab 4x4 with a 460 that starves for fuel at any thing much over quarter throttle. It will run wot until it uses the fuel in the carb up.(Dont take long with a 460 ) Pump and filters are new.Truck runs fine light to light or will cruise fine as long keep it below 35 and ain't trying to pull a hill. I'm thinking its the hot fuel return because when I changed the pump I could not get fuel to the carb until I blocked the return line. What I need to know is if I can bypass the valve or will the extra load on the pump burn it up.I'm going to try to put a pressure gauge on it later today and see what it reads open and blocked.

The fuel return line should have a fitting at the carb with an undersized hole that regulates how much fuel returns. If someone changed the fitting, the hole may be too big now.

If everything is original, it sounds like you still may have a problem. Did the sock in the tank look ok?

Will it work without the bypass? Possibly. But the rule of thumb I use is if Ford could have eliminated some parts and saved a dollar on a couple thousand trucks, then they probably would have. So they must have had a good reason to put it on there.

The socks new. The truck runs great with it bypassed, I'm just worried about fuel pump life.When I bypassed it today I noticed the return line got all the pressure, carb got what was left. I think P.O. hooked it up backwards when they put on new lines. It also crack that is dripping fuel so if its really needed I'll have to hunt down a new one.

There are two different orifices available for the hot fuel return;
.060 and .040. Use the smaller one if the carb is starving for fuel
or experiencing a power loss.
Part #s are:
E3TZ 9N176B (blue dot, .040)
E3TZ 9N176A (red dot, .060)

These were used mainly on the 460

Right, the 460 generates enough underhood heat that without the fuel return line the fuel in the line can vapor lock.

I'm just wondering if the fuel pump will handle the load of running against the floats or if it will burn up.
