I have a 86 F-250 6.9 and I was wondering is it hard to replace the injectors. I was gonna try to do it myself and needed a little advice. Thanks in advance
Use air pressure to clean out the bores before you remove injectors. Carefully loosen all fuel lines to injectors (you will note an adapter on top of one of the injectors, make sure you keep that for that same replacement injector) Very carefully move the steel lines away enough to get socket on injectors and remove injectors. A copper crush washer is on each injector, make sure they are out of each bore ... sometimes they will come out with the injector and sometimes not. A small pick tool will get it out.
GEt new or rebuilt injectors (injection shop). Get install kit for injectors. Use anti seize compound on injectors and also to hold new crush washer to bottom of injector for install. I beleive torque is 35 lb/ft for injectors.
Carefully move steel lines to injector and turn nut backwards to get it started. You should feel it drop into threads. Dont make them tight at this point til you make sure there is fuel to the injectors while cranking. When you get fuel flow, snug up steel lines.
DONT WORK THE STARTER TOO LONG ... they are heat sensitive to overcranking. 15 to 20 crank and let cool for 2 minutes between cranks.
also might help in starting if you use the block heater while doing the injector work.
Sam Im no mechanic, but this a can be a simple job. I have a 86 & 84 IDI and did a swap of injectors [newer injectors from the 86 to the 84] All but 2 were no problem at all...injector tips broken & stuck and thats from a shop I went to, used air tools to install these injectors.
so far so good but the only problem i have is that the fan belt got a hold of the cord for the block heater so i wont be able to plug it in, it is in the low 80's here so hopefully it wont matter
if you want ,,, you can get a heater/cord from international dealer for next to nothing and you'll have it for next winter season or just splice the cord you have. When you have to replace parts, better off at international dealer than ford dealer (stealer). Anything with the fuel system is good at injection shops and hard engine parts is from int'l or from sponsors in this forum.
i know about the ford dealer, i went to the dealer for injectors they wanted 87.50 for each injector (they were reman) went to the parts store here got them for 38.00 a piece so i hope that these injectors are ok. guess i'll find out
HELP........ I think i have a problem. I've got all the injectors replaced. Good Gosh runs like a whole nother truck. Problem back 2 injectors next to the fire wall covered in rust, rest of them wernt, is this a sign of some underlying problem? By the way this is the first time anything has been done to it in it's entire life, even the a/c with the 12 in it still works.
