Good Luck!
C60 means C-600, Z means 272cid Y-8 with 2 barrell and heavy duty configuration, 6 means 1956, H means Detroit assembly plant, and the 62717 means you have the 52,717th truck built in 56.
Thanks all, you've been very helpful. I'm still waiting for my ford truck book to arrive but I've found a '55 Big Job that warrants further investigation. If it came with the chrome strip running around the edge of the roof is it the custom cab? I can't find an easy explanation anywhere that clearly states what you get for your money in a custom cab versus normal in the Big Job range.
Custom cab has a Custom Cab badge on the doors, a chrome strip around the drip rail, special grille trim (hockey sticks on 55), should have had two arm rests, and door panel, kick panels, headliner, etc., etc., and a trim strip on the dash that also extends onto the doors. Custom cabs also had two door lock cylinders, and I think two outside rearview mirrors were standard on custom cabs. It would basically be like buying a new Ford truck, and choosing between a standard trim package, and an XLT or Lariat trim package. Just a bit fancier, but the same truck underneath. The Big Jobs had all the same options as the F-100 thru F-350, they are the same truck, but bigger, and had fatter fenders, and bigger motors, and thicker radiators, bigger chassis, transmissions, axles, etc., etc., etc. All of the body parts are the same, except for the fenders, and hood side trim. Every trim package available to the F-100 thru F-350 was available to the F-500 thru F-900.
WMJoe, thanks for all that. I think it's maybe a custom cab then so I'll have to make sure it's still complete with all the additional trim details. I'll give the fenders a good look over as they might be harder to source/replace than the rest of the body panels if they're different from the little pickups.
The fenders are the only body panels that are different. There are no sources currently for replacement Big Job fenders. This is disappointing to me too. I am working on getting materials to build fiberglass replacements, but it will be some time before I am able to make them available. I am still waiting to get enough money for my fire truck to get here, and it's fenders are going to be the mold forms. All other body pieces are interchangable from F-100 thru F-900. The hood, cab, doors, splash pans, air deflectors, etc., etc. The mechanical end of things is different, the only thing interchangable there would be the wiring, and the radiator shroud (even the radiator is different). The radiator will fit a smaller truck, and would be great for extra cooling, as they have a much thicker core. The F-100 thru F-350 I believe is a 2 or 2.5 inch core thickness, and the F-700+ (depending on motor, since the 700 also uses the 256 Y-block as a standard V-8 choice, the 750 + uses the 279 and 317 for 53-55) has I believe a 4 inch thickness
Thanks again WMJoe, I think my budget is around $2-4000 but I need rot free panels as bodywork gets expensive and I better stick with a F or T series tractor unit (or shorter wheelbase and I'll put on a 5th wheel myself) as the resto on a COE will be a bit too complicated for me. Need the twin screw, 322 and air that is a driver so I can get it heading towards home. I've found 4x '56 and a couple of '55 tandem big jobs so far. Tandems make it easier to track down the airbrake trucks as they all seem to have had the option. Can't make up my mind between the two looks yet, the '56 seems more popular but my ford truck book says the wraparound screen was an interim stopgap before the all new '57 came out and the overall styling of the '54 and '55 fit together a lot better than the '56. Me, I dunno yet but I'm sure there are plenty of strong opinions about.
