running board prep

I just brought some new running boards which has black powder coating on them; what are the reccomended preparation process for painting. Sand and paint or strip off prime, then paint. I was also planning on putting rhino linning on the boards instead of painting then has anyone else done this.
Thanks for any info

Can't you just rhino line over the powder? I would check that out first. Seems to me the rhino lineing would cover enough imperfections that you would't even have to prep very much. That assumes of course that there's no metal work needed which would cause major imperfections that wouldn't cover with the rhino lining.

Just my thoughts and I have certainly been wrong before. Good luck.

Are you sure the coating is actual powdercoat? That would be nice from a rust standpoint. I would talk to the Rhino folks (or whatever specific brand you'll be using, they are different). Paint doesn't adhere well to most powder-coats, but I would guess Rhino does. I been wrong before tho!

Wipe with thinners, if it comes off it is 1k primer and should be taken off
If it dose not come off then it is a e-coat, just scuff with a scotchpad, degrease and paint

Correction; I dought if its powder coating its the same thing that was on on my fenders when I purchased them I guess it a primer to keep them from rusting until they are pained.
