ahh my np 435 shifts alright, i can shift it fast (sometimes missing 3rd) i can shift without the clutch easily, just blip the throttle, 2nd is a bit hard sometimes.
but it is really friggin noisy! am i not using enough gear oil, or the right stuff? what o you guys use for gear oil? the 75w90 or the 85w140?
im using the 75, filled up to the fill plug on the ps of the tranny. btw mine is 4wd.
the haynes says it takes 7 qts!!!!!!!!! i could only fit 3?
someone said to pull the shifter and addd some more gear oil, from the top, has anyone here done that?
so, can I rebuild my NP435? I'd put myself decently high on a mechanical scale, but is it doable? are there any special tools i'll need? mine was just popping out of reverse, but then it started making bad noises, like a bad bearing, would it be safe to assume that the rear output bearing is bad and I need to shim the detent?
It's finally out of the truck now, so i'm trying to figure out what i'm getting into.
if you have the time and a book showing you how, and what to look for, id say do it. people say these gearboxes are simple, ive heard they are easy to rebuild. theres specific rebuild kits on jeff's bronco graveyard.
then again, you can probably find someone to rebuild it for cheap, like 300-400$
compared to most any other tranny thyre pretty easy to pull in and outta the truck 4 bolts, pull it back set it down drag it out DONE, stand up on a jack, jack it up w the jack arm pivoting forward toward the front of the truck, slide it in DONE. i like the tranny....i dont like the noise coming from mine.
if i can rebuild it drunk in college in a few all nighters in the back of my buddies trailer, anyone can
main tools i remember needing were a press, brass drifts, common hand tools, BFH, clean large work table, patience, beer and dial indicator and magnetic stand along with a micrometer
the hardest part of the whole deal is getting the old race out of the mainshaft that is for the input shaft bearing...major PITA

is ur gearbox this noisy?
There is something way wrong with that gearbox. Mine was quiet. It honestly sounds like the bearings were damaged by the lack of lube.
If you replace the metal dowel pin on the top of the aluminum housing, this will help the shifting.
If the metal dowel is worn, it will create problems in the shifting too.
Remove shifter stick, and inspect metal dowel that align shifter. Inspect the metal dowels and R & R if necessary. Clean and place gear oil on lower part of shifter on reinstallation of shifter.
