Pretty close. Its just minor cosmetic differences on the outside, and if memory serves theres a slight ratio difference, but they are identicle in performance and strength. Kinda like a Dana 24 and a New Process 205.

1st gear on the t-18's is 6.3 somthing vs the 435' 6.69

2nd gear is closer to 3.0:1 i think its 3.09?? 435 is 3.34?

3rd gears are slightly different as well

t-18 has cast iron top, 435 has aluminum top, the t-18 has a threaded cap that screws onto the top which holds the shifter in, the 435 has a spring loaded stamped cap thingy..

internally they are pretty much identical

Its the t-19 that use the syncro'd 1st gear, and would be my first choice out of the three for that very reason .

in my experience the borg warner's have a looser shift pattern due to only one orienting pin as opposed to the 435's dual pins!!!

my 435 down shifts pretty good from 4 to 3. if i'm going 55 and want to blow the doors off someone i can put it right in to 3rd. and for the shifter handles some of the newer ones have a end that is seperate from the rest of the handle, its held on with a pin. very sloppy. I just put an older shift handle in that was one solid peice it made it alot better

well, I'll just say that .. well.. learn how to double clutch. Mine sucks too and is getting worse. I was thinking of replacing or rebuilding it but learning how to double clutch to 1st while moving has taught me that you can do pretty much anything with these trannies if you know your rpms.

Double clutching doesn't change my problem, it's just as hard shifting from 4th to 3ed with anything more than about 25 mph. Accuracy as mentioned is a factor and I am adapting to where the sweet spot is. But when it does go in it's not clean. I can feel it hit a tooth like it's going to grind, but just one impact and then it goes in. I'm pretty sure that synchro is worn out but I can live without it for a while. I really want to see how the one I rebuilt drives for comparison, hopefully it won't be too long before I have the money to get it in the other truck.

my truck goes from 4-3 pretty decent but when i'm coasting to a stop and want to put it in 2nd to take off it won't go in and you have to wait till your fully stopped and you have to mess with it like putting it in 4th or reverese then trying 2nd and it will usually go in. I can hear the synchos whining allittle bit while i'm doing this, does this mean the synchros are going out?

Yep I think that your 2-3 synchro is either worn out or broken. I can always shift easily into second, if I'm going too fast it won't go in until I slow down to 25 mph or so then it gently slides in without grinding.

i wonder if some of these problems are from the new gl-5 gear oil, supposedly the syncros in these trannies DO NOT like it. my 435 rebuild instructions said to run a gl4 and not gl5, but i cant find gl4 anywhere?

The one in my Rollback shifts pretty good, down shifting from 4-3 is no problem at all. 3-2 isnt either, 2-1 isnt really all that bad either if i get it right.
