We just took our 90 Bronco, 5.8, out to Hollister to test out the new lift and we had the trans overheat and start leaking after a trip up a long trail. Is that just too much work on the stock trans cooler? Any ideas?
Has it been cleaned out anytime in the last while? There might be crud in it that is partially blocking it either from the inside or the outside. When you say stock do you mean the little one that is about 3 inches high and a foot long?
I don't think it has been cleaned out in a long while acctually, it would probably be more benificial to just go get a new, bigger one, I just wanted to make sure that it was that and not something else.
I would suggest you have a transmission service with new fluid and new filter. Look carefully in the bottom of the pan for debris. A little brown stuff, normal. Shiny metal, bad news. If it looks normal, blow air through the cooler while it is apart to see if there is junk in it.
At least in mine the ATF cooler is built into the radiator, and so if the ATF got overheated, you should've gotten your water temperatures at least a bit above normal, too.
Probably the converter never locked, so it generated a lot more heat. Another possibility, instead, or in addition to, is that the built in cooler is less then perfect.
A better transmission shop should be able to test your cooler, and clean if it's needed. Installing an external cooler is another option, and that can be done either to augment the current cooler, or to replace it.
You may have blown a seal, I did with my 91 F150 5.8L going up a long grade, had a new front seal and a heavy duty torque converter put in, it locks up a lot sooner now and runs cooler at the expense of low end torque which I really miss, a trade off. I have the same drivetrain in my 90 Bronco and am going to install a good external oil cooler, any suggestions on a good type and brand?
What kind of gears are you running? If you did not do a gear swap with that 6 inch lift then you are putting way to much strain on your tranny and that will burn her up. If you did put low end gears in, then I would say get a B&M tranny cooler. I put one on my 88 and it is great. Very easy install as well. I think there is some pictures of it in my gallery.
