I have a '89 F150, 300 straight 6, with a 5 speed manual.
It's getting harder and harder to shift. I'm getting more 'slop' in the clutch pedal. I've crawled around and can find no way to make any adjustments. On my older truck I could extend the push rod, but this has a cable/hose that goes directly into the tranny case. Any ideas?
Ah that has the hydrualic throwout bearing setup. To my knowlege there is no adjustment. A low pedal could be signs of- air in the system, bad clutch master cylinder or hydraulic bearing or a worn clutch. I would try bleeding it and see if anything happens.
Also, if he's not familiar with the system, try just adding some DOT 3 to the reservoir. It's the one just on the other side of the brake master cylinder and a tad smaller in size.
reservoir is full. checked that first. I didn't see a bleeder valve, but doubt air is the problem. It's just normal wear on the clutch, but you'd think there would be a way of compensating, until it's time for a replacement.
There is no adjustment on that clutch. If you still get a lousy pedal, the slave may be leaking. I would try bleeding it first, and if that doesn't cure it, you are probably looking at a new clutch. It's been my experience that when a M5OD gets hard to shift, it's an early warning sign that you need a new clutch.
There are several plastic bushings in the pedal assembly under the dash. I would check to make sure that all of those bushings are not worn to the point of allowing slop in the clutch pedal cross shaft. You can buy a new cross shaft lever from Ford to adjust the clutch, but the hydraulic system should be able to adjust for clutch wear.
I have an 89 F150. 302W with 5 spd manual and it does the exact same thing. Am about to install a new clutch and the internal slave cylinder cause thats leaking slowly as well. Try the old test: high revs in 4th gear at about 10 - 20 mile an hour. Let the clutch out and see if it slips. If so then I reckon the cog box will have to come out cause the clutch is shagged !
