I hadn't driven the truck in a while, what with the floor being repaired and everything. But I needed to hear it run. So I threw an egg crate in for a seat and took it for a short drive.
Well, I get about 200 yards from my house, take off from the corner, like a normal, reasonable driver at maybe 1/4 throttle. All is well, until this nasty bang and subsequent knock that kills the motor. I can re-fire it, but the knock is still there and it wont run for more than 1 second. When cranking, I also note that it sounds like one cylinder is not building compression.
So I think something in the valvetrain went. I'll run a compression test tomorrow and pull the valve covers to see what went wrong. Right now I guess either:
1. Broke valve
2. Stuck valve and bent pushrod
3. Stuck valve and broke piston
4. Broke valve seat
Dang dude sorry to hear! Keep us posted!!! If it makes ya feel any better, I was hoping to fire off my 390 today but just couldn't make it happen either! Bout another week or so...maybe two!!! Sheez
How long have the trucks been sitting? Gas goes bad very quickly these days. I ruined a carb with bad gas. Even after cleaning the tank and rebuilding the carb it never did run right. I finally had to buy a new carb. I have heard of bad gas causing stuck valves and doing this kind of damage.
Good luck! I hope the damage is minimal.
Man that's tough. It's hard to come up with a reasonable explanation for that...you've had really good success with that engine and plenty enough run time to know it's reliable...I can't imagine how sitting for a while could do damage like this. Good Luck with it. Hey....I don't suppose you'd want to send me the adjustable rocker assemblies you have???? LOL.
Ahhh hell! thats no good. Fires and runs for a second ?? I had mine do something like that when I forgot the main vac line on the back of the carb plate after the carb rebuild. Would start but not run for shiat, backfire etc.. just tossing it out there..hope it's nothing $$$ to resolve.. ,Redman
I should be able to look at it monday. Tomorrow I'm taking a trip to see a brother. On the plus side, I'll get to drive dad's new 2006 F150 XLT Super Crew.
Anyway, I've got some serious agressions that need to be released. Anyone know where I can get a punching bag? I've got the overwhelming urge to break something...
Kurt that stinks. Hopefully a easy fix with no major damage. I think Putt's onto something with the broken rocker shaft. I've had that experience also. Not a pleaseant one either. Good luck bud.
I take my agression out on the stump after cutting the tree down to split.....
BOOM!
Then the sheriff shows up and I have to explain things, but it sure is fun!
I had a somewhat similar experience with the 302 I had in a '77 Mustang. Was going down the highway, when I heard a load pop from the motor. I couldnt reach the key fast enough to shut it down. Ended up busting a rocker, which in turn push on the side of the valve spring just right to let the keepers loose and drop the valve. It was a sad day when I tore it apart. It has complete grenaded the #3 piston/rod and put a huge hole in the coolant passage. Let us know what you find.
i find comfort in emptying the fridge as Gtex mentioned, and building a small gas ring fire around those cool little green propane bottles, then shooting them with the 9MM... i bent a pushrod and had the same problem, when the pushrod bent it sideloaded the rocker arm and then snapped it but no major internal problems.. Best luck and keep us posted..
Well, it doesn't sound too good, hope for you that it's a simple fix with no serious damage. I think Greg has the right idea on how to release aggression, I seem to release aggression on a regular basis... even when I'm not angry. Problem with that is my fridge is down a flight of stairs, so it eventually becomes safer to switch over to coffee. LOL
Anyways let us know what's up with your truck when you know.
