replacing the ECM??

1999 Ford Explorer Sport 2d 4x4 4.0L V6. My truck idles fine but bogs out when put under throttle. If I put the truck in gear it stalls out as soon as I give it any gas. It is throwing error codes for all 4 O2 sensors and tranny solenoids a-d. I suspect the ECM so I bought a replacement from the junkyard and my truck will not start with it. I suspect this is due to the alarm. Any suggestions as to why it will not start with the ECM or maybe another possible solution to the problem? Note that my gas tank was recently hit by a large rock on a trail and the bottom is dented up a bit. The problem, however, did not start until about a week after this incident. Thank you for your time.

Did you ever check fuel pressure? A weak pump will make it lean. Were those lean 0-2 codes?

thank you for your reply. fuel pressure is 60+. i don't know if thats where it is supposed to be exactly but its plenty enough. the codes were all thrown due to a short circuit. one of my exhaust heat guards broke loose and cut through a few of the wires going to the O2 sensor harness.. this blew the fuse.. so i hard wired that and replaced the internal and external fuse for that and all my electrical problems disappeared.. the truck is still however stalling when put in gear.. fuel pressure is fine and she's pulling plenty enough air.. replaced the plugs and wires.. shes not throwing any fuel, air, or cylinder codes so i'm stumped.. thank you again for your reply.

Exclamation

I tried the same thing today. I picked up a used ECM with the same code for my 99 explorer thinking an easy swap. After installing it, the theft light would flash and the truck would not start. I contacted Ford and they said even if its the same code, you need to take the computer in and have all the infomation downloaded from your old computer to the new one and have the keys programed. Anyone have experience with this?

the pats key system also runs through the pcm. You usually have to download the information from the old pcm, then replace with the new, then upload. you can also program it using the tear tag(4 digit number) on the replacement. You will still have to get the pats keys programmed(ford dealer needed)

Question

The code on mine is XQX1. So do I need the hole PCM programed or just for the key. I guess I'm confused.

The Dealers do it. They Flash the old ECM and load new and updated info. I dont know if any other shop can do it.

xIcarus - why not go back to the old PCM and fix the real propblem. PCM's don't usually go bad and should only be swapped as a last resort. You gave a whole host of potentials...and not to judge your repair work...but the O2 wires and maybe jostling the fuel pump with the smacked fuel tank could still be part of the problem.

Tell us what the code numbers were and we can try to help a little more.
