I have a 1994 ranger I bought last year. Apparently the previous owner (or dealership) yanked the check engine light. The truck has been experiencing an odd problem where it feels like it is going completely out of timing, and only running on 2 of 4 cylinders. As of this past month, it went from VERY rare, to almost 100% of the time with this problem. My mechanic (I dont do electrical) told me he couldn't pull any codes because the ecm was not responding.
So, I figure the first step is to replace the issue.
#1. Where is the ECM located?
#2. Do I have to match the numbers exactly? Its a 94 2.3L MT with no cruise, shouldn't any matching trucks ecm work?
I did put a new ECU in, and it didn't fix the problem, put a bunch of other stuff in. I ended up trading the truck in 2+ years ago for $1000 towards an 09 Honda Fit Sport. Sold that privately last year (made money rofl) and bought a 2010 Equinox.
I replaced the ranger with a 74 f100 (much better pickup than the ranger).
