I'm adding a transmission and oil temp. senders on an V10, has any of you done this and what is the best locations and what is the best way to do this, do I drill holes and tab the sender into it?
I added a trans temp gauge, the hookup is really easy. Assuming you have the 4R100 tranny the install location for the sending unit is on the drivers side. While lying under the truck on the drivers side, locate the shift linkage and you should find just in front of it (approx 6") a small access port with a filler plug. If memory serves me correctly you'll need a 3/16" allen wrench to remove it. Minimal fluid should be lost. Wrap the threads of the sending unit with teflon tape or use some other type of thread sealer and screw it in. Run your wiring and your done.
if you have the torqshift 5 speed, the port is also on the drivers side behind the external trans filter. Not the easyist to get to.
My temp sender is a one wire unit that uses the chasis ground as the other return. cannot use teflon tape on it or you might not get it grounded properly.

The sending unit (Auto Meter) I'm using is a one wire hook-up as well and I'm using teflon tape on the threads and the gauge works just fine. When the threads mesh together they still get a good ground.
Best place to install an oil temp sending unit is in the oil pan, but you have to drop the pan and weld in a bung and screw the sending unit to that.
On my 2005 V10 I used one of the hex plugs on back of the heads 3/8" I think. you wont get as a accurate reading but it works. To make it easier you should get an hex bit socket set, Sears sells them. Also make sure that the engine is cool because some oil will leak out. ~Gage~
Gage2502, do you remember which hex plug you pulled, the only clue I have past read was to pull them untill you find oil. (cool of course) It is nice to have a E350 since the doghouse gives direct access to the back of the heads.
