If you are worried about blowing up new speakers, don't. I doubt if even the cheapest aftermarket speakers are worse than the stock ones. I put a set of Pioneer's in mine I got from Wally-World and love them. I think they were about $60 a pair. And then was able to upgarde the head unit as well without worry about blowing up the speakers at loud volumes. (Mine needs to be loud to overpower the PSD with straight pipes and a 6" turnout ). Sound so much better than the stock speakers!!

Pclark-

Did you just swap the speakers and run the stock head-unit at first? I've been considering doing that... how significant was the improvement? Also, does the stock unit have any issues driving aftermarket speakers?

Yes you can with an inline converter.

The stock radio isn't very powerful. There's no chance of overdriving descent speakers.
Here's a linky-poo to the 6-CD changer radio:

http://www.evisteon.com/prod_serv/mo...io/index.shtml

It's got an 80W amp, so that would be 20 Watts per channel on a 4-speaker system. My single CD AM/FM I believe is 14W per channel. I did replace the 4 stock speakers with some Infinity Reference speakers, which are mid-grade speakers at best, and the sound is clearer. The bass is a lot better too, but the head unit is quite incapable of driving them to their full potential, you can tell. My boss, who is a speaker-nut, could tell the difference right away.

I was actually more concerned with underdriving them - the stock radio not being able to produce enough oomph to move the stiffer aftermarket speakers.

What I'm pondering is a tiered approach:
1. Soundproofing
2. Replace speakers
3. Add amp/replacement head unit/new speaker wiring/etc.
4. Add subs/additional amp

Any specs on the 6 disk for the 05 superduty? Will new speakers sound better?
Or does the stock radio just not have enough power.

tvsjr,

I replaced the head unit first so I could listen to my CDs. Later upgraded the CD head unit to a better and more powerful unit and consequently blew out 2 of the stock speakers. Then I replaced the stock speakers. The new ones were rated up to 120 watts max and the head unit was pushing 50X4 watts. Could not believe how much better they sounded than the stock speakers. It was more improvement than the new CD head unit. Now I also have an Alpine 400 watt amp bridged to a single Alpine 12" sub and a six disc changer (as soon as I put the changer back in the truck. Took it out for the sub.) The sub is between front and rear seats in the center -- still have room for two folks to ride comfortable on the back seat of the SuperCab. The head unit and amp have built in crossovers to filter the highs and lows to the right places. With everything installed, (done myself) the sound is awsome. Fullness for a great sound, but when you want it, enough power to make your teeth rattle.
