I'm just curious, does anybody know why Ford equipped some 2.8's with solid lifters? Just for kicks? I was suprised to read (on an fairly older thread) that Ford put solid lifters on 2.8's. It's not important, just send a shout out if you know the answer. Thanks.-"$lick"
That's just the way the 2.8 was designed. They were all solid lifter, as was the 2.6. The 2.9 was changed to hydraulic lifter but without any improvements made to the oiling system, which has a lot to do with the dreaded 2.9 lifter tick.
Vell, in Chermany, they know how to adjust things like that, and enjoy doing so... It was called the Cologne engine way back when, as it was built there, I beleive.
I think it was to lower the valvetrain mass, and an attempt to keep up with the Joneses, no make that Opels and BMWs. Back in the late 60s early 70s, lifters as small as needed were just not being produced, I'd bet, and they would have cost more. All (OK, most) of the competition had mechanicals, so it was not deemed a downgrade. Plus, they sound nice when adjusted correctly... Also allow the engine to rev higher.
