I am looking at a '71 Sport Custom. 4x4. It is supposed to have a stock 429. Although I cannot find any info on wether or not this is the true stock motor that came in this truck. The truck itself is in 6 out of 10 condition. Missing the carb and needs a front bumper, tailgate and windshield. Did this truck come with a 429? It also has a 4 spd. tranny.
I think the y ( 4th letter in vin ) says it came with a 360. But I've loaned out my book so I'm not certain. Someone will know and reply. Lot's of luck!
As far as I know the 429 was never offered in a truck at all. The biggest engine available that year was a 390. I had a 71 F-250 Sport Custom too. Darn....still wish I had it. Later,
The biggest engien available in '71 for 4x4 was a 360. They didn't get 385 series engines until late in the 70's. and even then I am not sure they ever had a 429.
How ever there have been many engines swapped into these trucks. The 385 series (ie 429/460) could have been put in.
The best way to tell one amily from the other (big block family that is) An FE or 360-428 The valve covers will acctually overlap the intake. As in the intake is part of the head. Also, the thermostat housing comes off the front of the intake and not the top if it is a FE.
Good luck on your quest for finding out the type of motor you have.
