i need a flywheel for a manual trans for my 77 f150 4x4. I was told that a 360/390 wheel and clutch assy. would work for it so i was also wondering if a 352 flywheel and clutch assy. would work. the 429 has a 2bbl carb and is out of a 71 merc. anybody know if the 352 flywheel and clutch would fit a 429?
I don't know what else fits, but I have one that's been laying around for about 30 years. It's supposed to fit a 429/460, but it may have (probably) come off a 400M. It's been so long, I can't remember for sure. I'm pretty sure it came from a pickup. The 351/400M used the same C6 automatics and torque converters as the 429/460, so it seems reasonable they would use the same parts in a manual trans.
I don't have a use for it, as I'll likely never build the car I bought it for, so I'd sell it. Weighs a ton. I just have the factory cast iron bellhousing and the flywheel. Been laying around for 30 years, so it definitely needs cleaned up and resurfaced.
well, i heard that the 351m and 400 flywheels would fit, but wouldn't be balanced quite right and the motor would shake like crazy. i'm sure a little more research wouldn't hurt though.
I am in the same boat as you are. I am building a 460 (which uses the same flywheel as a 429) and need a neutral balance flywheel. I did some looking on ebay and there is a company in california that sells aftermarket flywheels for around $140. Don't know too much about them, but they look good.

SOME 460s use the same flywheel as the 429. The 429 is neutral balanced as are the early 460s. But the later 460 are external balanced and the early flywheel will not work there, just as the late 460 flywheel will not work on the 429.

Whoever told you that was wrong. A 351m-400 flywheel will not bolt up to a 429-460 crankshaft. The bolt pattern is too small.
