Congratulations, I myself was a newbee just a short 10 months ago. This is an invaluable resource for help for the uninitiated as I was when I started. Don't hesitate to ask the most basic sounding question there is always someone here to help.
Cool, a 55 project that's in the same stage as I am. I also just joined and was doing a lot of reading here before I posted. I opted for a new yorker subframe to install on mine. I'm in the process now of doing that. Check out my gallery also. Although I don't have any cool action shots with sparks flying.
When You paint the frame, paint shop have a special paint that doesn't harden all the way and wont chip off as easy. I used it and it has held up great on a 69 bonco!
Nice start so far... but looking at your gallery ? It doesn't seem like there are enough parts on that trailer for a whole truck ???. You need more parts... ok everybody, let's send Ken some parts... (Ken please post your address for shipping !!) Kidding Ken...Just kidding.
One thing you did by buying it in pieces is miss all the fun and busted knuckles from dismantling. Those 50 year old nuts are a blast...sometimes you just have to stop work and catch your breath from having so much fun
Keep a photo journal and keep us posted, we slackers love to see pictures of someone actually progressing on their truck. Let us know your plan...stock or custom. There is a wealth of knowledge here so anything that trips you up has probably already been stumbled over by one of us... Some of us stumble over the same thing more than one time !!
You'll see some ribbing and a little light hazing... but it's all in fun and most here can take and give it well.. don't ever get your feelings hurt by what is said here, cause we're all family.
Do you know about F-100 Supernationals ? May 18-20 the largest gathering of our breed. covers all ford trucks from Henry's #1 Thur current, but the emphasis is the 53-56. here's a link to the info
this is a prime opportunity that only comes once a year to see both in-progress and show/magazine quality rides and steal all the good ideas. It's also Pat Fords little way of giving you the opportunity to test the upper limit of your Visa. You should try to make it if you can...Birsdboro, Pa couldn't be that far from Knoxville ???
So, far I have been undecided to what I was doing with the frame. Was I going to get it sandblasted, glass betted, or just wire brush it. Then will I get the frame painted, undercoated, or powder coated.<O</O I started to wire brush a couple of cancer spots that I found. They are not too bad but enough to cut the frame. A couple of weeks ago I removed the body mounts & leaf spring hangers. I began to think this was sandblasted & painted. Then I rolled the frame over a noticed a crack right at the engine mount. So, the mind changed gears. I am now grinding all of the one million pop rivets and knocking them out (occasionally busting my hand when I miss the center punch with a five pound mallet, OUCH). The frame is now coming completely apart. I am going to sandblast all frame parts indivdually. The DS rail is the one that has the minor cancer at the rear leaf spring hanger and the crack on the engine mount. A little set back but after thinking about it the frame will be completely rust free, including between the cross members & Frame.
I just love it when a noob jumps headlong into a project!!!!!!!! I know people who are 2 years into a project and haven't gotten this far. Welcome aboard
