hello. ive had some troubles with my u-joints and carrier bearing in the last few years. the u-joints have been replaced atleast twice, and the carrier bearing once. it is starting to get the vibrations back again, and it gets worse every few days. just like normal...
while i was under the truck last weekend, i noticed that the transmission is leaning towards the passenger side.
could a bad transmission mount be causing all this trouble in the u-joints and carrier bearing?
thanks
It could cause problems, especially if the transmission is sitting toward one side. This would put two different angles on U-joints, and unwanted stress on the driveline and carrier bearing.
Make sure to check the engine mounts located on the engine towers. It seems like at least one of the engine mounts is also broken. Might need to readjust clutch linkage once all the new mounts are in.
Try to pry on the transmission near the mount, the side that is low. You should see where the problem is, unless it's at the front mounts, like mentioned. Pry in the front to see where the play is, in that case. It's gotta be your mounts; U joints and carrier bearings just don't wear that quick when all else is lined up.
With the engine hood open and up, then If you have some one put it 1st gear, while holding the brake pedal down and let off the clutch pedal, and observing if then engine mount are worn or broke. Do this with in the reverse gear also. It's a quick and easy way to check bad engine mounts and the transmission mount.
yeah, ill fill ya in, but it will be about a month before i go home and get started on this.
ive noticed that the engine will pull to the passenger side i beleive when it is revved, the whole truck will pull a little bit also when it is revved. i dont know if that is a sign of bad motor mounts or not.
yeah, that was my first suspicion. then i noticed the transmission tilted to the side and thought that had to be causing some trouble. this is actually the 2nd driveshaft that we've had on the truck. we got it from a junk yard, so who knows... it looked true though.
alright guys, im finally about to get this project started. ive discovered the passenger side motor mount and the tranny mount are both bad. it seems pretty straight forward, but i was wondering if you all have any tips or tricks for the replacement of the mounts?
thanks
Transmission mount - loosen the one nut and remove the bolt going thru the transmission mount and crossmember.
Jack up the transmission, transmission mount must clear the cross member.
Loose the two bolts on mount/ tranmission, and remove mount. Transmission mount goes on one way, pay close attention when removing the old mount and replacing the new mount.
I forgot, 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive?
