Exhaust question

I am putting a 429/C6 combo in my 55 F-100 Custom Cab and was wondering what headers (or exhaust manifolds) people have used and are there any clearance issues?

The clearance issues are usually getting around the stock steering box. Most aftermarket IFS setups (except Mustang II) have steering box clearance issues also.

One way to help the situation is to install the engine about an inch or so off center to the passenger side.

you didn't say what front suspension you are using but a friend of mine (North Carolina) used Hookers for a 429 Torino and I don't THINK he modified them.

I know two people with your setup and they both have Sanderson Shorties. If they don't have it for your application, they'll make it. Go check out their website. www.sandersonheaders.com

429/c6

I just finished going through installing an exhaust system on my 54-429/C6 and it was a big deal. I have a 72 Camaro front end and was unable to find any off the shelf headers that would work. I got a price for a custom set of headers and when I was told $1500 I decided I would find another way. I finally ended up getting NOS exhaust manifolds for the 429 from (Green Sales) and had a custom installation of Flowmaster 40s. The final result is exactly what I wanted-great sound and good look.

with stock suspension, it should be easy to find headers to fit. On my Volare 460/C6, I ended up building my own headers. Pictures in my gallery

Sam,

How did you route your steering linkage? Looks like between two of the headpipes? Any issues with that?

I routed between.. There is enough slip in the joints when loosened to remove the central rod. Have about 1/2in clearance to the outside pipe around the steering linkage.

I'll try to take another couple pictures today.. I see there are none with the complete setup

That looks alot better than it looked in one of the other pictures... I thought your steering was almost rubbing on the header pipes... Looks nice! Where did you buy the header parts (flange, tubes, etc) from?

I bought the flanges from EBAY, and the tubes (U&J bends) and collectors from Schoenfeld Headers

HeadersByEd.com gave me a lot of info.. I bought his info kit, which doesn't add much over what is on the web site. Mine are NOT equal length.

It took me 6 months of occasional weekend work to make them and get them coated. Xmas to 4th of July.

I see the U/J prices have gone up to $10 per part from $7, now 22 months later than when I ordered mine.

I had them coated at HPC in Oklahoma for $220 I think.. overall I have about $400 in them.. 1/2-1/3 what it would cost to have them built locally..

I did not try the Sanderson headers for the 460/volare setup. Altho I have seen others discuss the problems. IF you think you want to go the Sanderson route, have the headers mounted BEFORE you finalize the engine mount position.. it will save you lots of grief..
