My 71 f100 is manual steer. Also 3 speed on column. I want to go automatic and power steer. I have a line on a 77 auto and power steer. If I take the column and all out of the 77 to put in my 71, will it interchange? If I take the steering gear and all out as well will it hook up in the 71? I'm a junkyardin fool in Alabama!
Yes, they will swap. The steering column should be the same length and diameter. The steering shaft, (rod down the middle of the column) will be shorter for a powersteering box. If you swap the power steering box and column everything should bolt right up with no extra holes to drill.
The powersteering drag link (??? From the powersteering box to the cross link???) is shorter for power steering so you will probablly want to swap that also.
I agree with 'oughtsix' and would add that you will have to use the same drag link from the power steering box because the shaft diameter and attaching nut is different than with the manual box.
I agree with everything so far but one thing i ran into is that the Turn singnal switch and wiring is difrent on the Later model. You have to use the '77 switch but you will need to splice it into you '71 wiring harness. That can be rather intresting because the wirs are difrent and there are more on the '77 because of hazzard light switch on colum. Good luck.
What about an aftermarket column, the reason I ask is because those trucks/parts are hard to find around these parts so maybe an IDIDIT or something like that.
FWIW: Wiring wise, it is completely doable. All seven wires you need for any type of column, on the 1971, is right there in the column and the connector is right there under the dash.
