I recently put a '74 460 into a '79 f-150, 4 speed, 4x4.
The problem is; erratic ignition. The engine ran perfectly out of the doner pickup. There is new wires, coil, cap, rotor. The ignition module is the same one that powered the 400 in the '79, tested fine. When I put the timing light on number one, it some times blinks twice in a row and sometimes only lights up about 1/2 the time or less. It backfires through the carb like it is way out of timing, I checked firing order.
Any ideas, I'm only 23 and lossing my hair over this.
Take it to a parts store, move the wires during testing. The wires often break which causes the problems you have observed when the vacuum advance mechanism moves the distributor plate.
The timing chain needs to be replaced on those engines at 80K miles and yours may need it just from age.
